"FALLOUT: The Hiroshima Cover-Up and the Reporter Who Revealed It to the World" with Author Lesley Blume

After the United States decimated Hiroshima with the first atomic bomb ever used in warfare, the US government and occupation forces downplayed and covered up the true aftermath of its then-experimental weapons in that city and Nagasaki. Occupation forces suppressed Japanese media and foreign correspondents on the restricted topic of the human toll in the atomic cities—and the world's attention began to drift elsewhere. That is, until New Yorker correspondent John Hersey got into Hiroshima in spring 1946 and revealed the truth to the world in his now classic article, "Hiroshima." This presentation of FALLOUT, which will premiere on the Museum’s Facebook page, recounts how John Hersey got the story that no other journalist could—and how he subsequently played a role in ensuring that no nuclear attack has happened since, possibly saving millions of lives.

This premiere is part of regular programming commemorating the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II made possible by Bank of America.
