The Jules Vernon Normandy Academy Scholarship

The Jules Vernon Normandy Academy Scholarship enables students across the United States access to lessons learned during the incredible journey the U.S. took during World War II.

Jules Vernon displayed the grit and determination of the veterans of World War II through his tenacity in achieving his dream of becoming a European tour guide specializing in World War II. From his home in England, Jules drove his jeep to Normandy in 2004 for the 60th Anniversary of D-Day. He became hooked on the region and its history. He returned in 2005 to work for a guiding company. He trained extensively in the winter of 2005-2006, learning the roads, monuments, beaches, and fields throughout the region.

In 2014 Jules was hired by the National World War II Museum for the 70th Anniversary of D-Day and its Band of Brothers Tours. Museum tour guests became friends and admirers of Jules as his bigger than life personality provided many hours of detailed and entertaining tours of England and France. His life was cut short by cancer, but his spirit lives on in those whose lives he touched.

July 2020:

A letter from Jules’ Family:

When we were asked to write a few words about Julian, we found it very difficult to narrow it down, especially as he had such a huge personality.

Julian was certainly a force of nature, with his enthusiasm of anything militaria and World War II-related. Becoming a tour guide was his dream job as he had always aspired to be the storyteller. He was such a cheeky, bubbly person who always made everyone feel welcome with his infectious laugh and a smile that we all miss. You definitely knew when he entered the room, as you could hear him before you saw him, like the saying goes “Once seen, never forgotten!”

If he knew that a permanent scholarship was put in place in his memory, he would have been so proud and overwhelmed, just like we are. He would have loved to have known that someone else is getting the chance to experience and share his beloved Normandy.

Thank you
Kind regards
Fiona and Rebecca
Wife and Daughter of Julian (Jules) Vernon
