On Saturday, October 1, 2022, join The National WWII Museum, in partnership with the Merchant Marine Veteran Association, as we commemorate the recent awarding of the Congressional Gold Medal to WWII Merchant Mariners.

During World War II, Merchant Mariners served with bravery and honor as they kept the Allies supplied on the front lines. These mariners were private seamen who enlisted to sail on merchant ships across the Pacific and Atlantic. They did not see combat yet risked their lives in supplying the tools needed to win the war. Roughly 4 percent of those who served were killed, which was a higher casualty rate than any other US military service. Out of the 243,000 of men who served in the Merchant Marines in World War II, approximately 1,500 of them are alive today.

Registration for the event is preferred, but not required. This program will be livestreamed on Facebook, YouTube, and Vimeo in addition to the in-person event at the Museum.
