November at The National WWII Museum. View as a webpage.

November is a special month at the Museum, as we get the opportunity to honor veterans of all conflicts. As you'll see below, our online Veterans Day programming lasts all day and includes a virtual ceremony that celebrates those who have served our country. Additionally, a special exhibit leaving next month, Remembered Light, offers a unique look at one Army chaplain's WWII experience through art created with his collected stained glass shards from bombed churches across Europe. The limited time left to see that exhibit, as well as Ghost Army, which leaves in January, makes it a great time to visit the Museum. Our new safety protocols remain in full effect, offering interactive exhibits free from the large crowds you'd normally encounter during this busy season! And if you can't make it to campus, or even if you can, be sure to check out our calendar of online programs below.

On Veterans Day, the Museum will offer free admission to veterans of all conflicts, as well as an engaging all-day slate of online commemorative programming, including a virtual commemorative ceremony at 11:00 a.m. followed by a performance from the Victory Belles. For more information and the full lineup of the day's events, visit nationalww2museum.org/veterans-day.

This special exhibition of 25 art pieces was produced by Atelier Le Roux in Oakland, California, using shards of glass from damaged and destroyed European churches collected during World War II by the late US Army Episcopal chaplain Frederick McDonald. McDonald, who served under General Omar Bradley in the 12th Army Group through war-torn Europe, collected shards of stained glass and other mementos from desecrated sanctuary sites he visited from 1944 to 1945 after he first encountered a church in England destroyed by bombing and was heartbroken by the ruins.

Ghost Army: The Combat Con Artists of World War II explores the story of the US Army’s 23rd Headquarters Special Troops, a top-secret unit who elevated battlefield deception to an art form during World War II to fool Adolf Hitler’s forces. The 23rd, known as the “Ghost Army,” included future famed artists such as Bill Blass, Ellsworth Kelly, and Art Kane, who waged war with inflatable tanks and vehicles, fake radio traffic, sound effects, and even phony generals. This carefully selected group of artists, engineers, professional soldiers, and draftees—armed with nothing heavier than .50 caliber machine guns—saved thousands of lives and played an important part in Allied victory in World War II.
